Yeah, Detroit gets a bad rap. Sure, the city has had its share of problems over the years, but in the wake left behind by manufacturing and the auto industry, a new generation of artists, business owners, and restauranteurs have made Motown their home. We recently made our way to the Motor City for a photo shoot and made a point to sample the local fare. We’ve shared some snapshots and a to-do list of our favorite Detroit hotspots below – check them out!

1. Eastern Market: Pop by this expansive indoor/outdoor market any day of the week and you’re sure to find everything from locally grown food to locally grown art. The district is awash with colorful murals and vibrant street art (a Street Art Festival is set for 9 days in September). And you can check out local spirits from Detroit City Distillery at their tasting room right around the corner.

2. Astro Coffee: The best cup of joe in the city. Come for the cold brew, stay for the atmosphere.

3. Gold Cash Gold: A culinary experience with a conscience. Corktown’s Gold Cash Gold is home to incredible food and a business model that gives back to local organizations. Every month, a different non-profit is selected to benefit from the restaurant’s fundraising and education.

4. Michigan Central Station: Like a modern-day Parthenon, when people talk about Detroit’s ruins, the’re speaking about the decaying Michigan Central Station building. Once a bustling transit stop, the building still stands strong and casts its long shadow over Corktown. Plans are in the works to revitalize the building.

5. W. Canfield Street: Home to Shinola‘s Flagship store and Willie’s Detroit, the 400 Block of W. Canfield houses some of the best shopping and food in the city. Once you’ve got your fill of Shinola’s leather goods and bike works, walk across the street to Motor City Brewing Works for the city’s best pizza.

6. “Splash” Mural: This colorful, 9 story mural sits on the west side of a high rise at the corner of East Grand Boulevard and Beaubien Street.
