Faced with a Challenge

This picture was taken on day 13 of a 14 day canoeing trip in Minnesota's pristine Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. The next morning, I was to wake up at the crack of dawn and complete the nine and a half mile portage to Lake Superior. Other than the Grand Portage, the next largest portage in the BWCA is 2.5 miles. This was sure to be a challenge. We completed the portage in three hours flat the next morning without putting the canoes down once. It was quite the accomplishment and the freezing cold water of Lake Superior felt spectacular after a morning of portaging. In the picture I am wearing our own version of a Voyageur's satchel and I am decked out with a Mo-hawk that was given to me by my fellow trippers with the trauma sheers from the med-kit.
